German state of Hesse declares itself GM Free

The state of Hesse has become the latest GM free zone in Germany as part of a coalition arrangement between the state Christian Democrats and the Green Party, the USDA reports.

There are already around 200 ‘biotech free zones’ in Germany, which are intended to promote the regions and encourage tourism. Political support for GM free regions is increasingly mainstream, with most of the major political parties coming in behind local initiatives.
