Northland: Council move backs GE-free campaign

Northern Advocate, October 23 2013

The long running campaign to keep Northland GE-free is making headway.

The outgoing Whangarei District Council this month agreed to publicly notify a proposed plan change that will prohibit outdoor releases of genetically modified organisms.

Plan change 131 also makes GMO field trials a discretionary activity but allows genetically modified medicines and veterinary vaccines to be used.

However Environment Minister Amy Adams has suggested she will change the law to ensure local councils cannot control GMOs.

Incoming Far North mayor John Carter has already taken a stance on this.

Addressing voters in Kerikeri before the election, he said: “I absolutely oppose what the Government is suggesting – to take away the right of the local community to decide on what happens with GE – and, if I’m fortunate enough to be elected as mayor, I intend to take that battle down to the Parliament to Amy Adams and say ‘not good enough’. It’s our right to decide what happens in our district, not theirs.”
